Roberta “Bertie” Ballinger was my grandmother. Born in 1928, she was a pioneer in her time. She ran a gas station convenience mart and raised four kids on her own. She had platinum blonde hair and great big blue eyes. If you were lucky you could keep up with her. She never stopped moving, and set the pace for the next three generations of female entrepreneurs in our family. It’s the nostalgia of penny candy, ice cream soda’s and grandma’s smile that has inspired me to open Bertie’s of Arcadia.
Stop in for a milk shake, grab some candy by the pound, relax at the soda fountain or find the latest eclectic fashion for a quarter of the price. We’ll be here with smiles on.
